Triple P founder Professor Matt Sanders has visited Offaly to share his expert parenting tips and mark the launch of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program in the region.

As part of the first phase of the rollout, Professor Sanders delivered 90-minute seminar to a packed room in Tullamore.

In two years almost 3,000 families in Westmeath and Longford have chosen this programme which has more than 30 years ongoing research to back it up.

"If we are serious about trying to reduce the level of behavioural and emotional problems of children in the community, then we really need to tackle parenting head on," says Professor Sanders.

"If we get that piece right, many many problems can be avoided with children."

The Triple-P (Positive Parenting Programme) is a set of evidence-based parenting programmes which reduce child behavioural and emotional problems or reduce the possibility of them happening, by giving parents proven tools and skills to build stronger families.  Parents also learn tips which help to promote their child's confidence and independence.  There is something for all parents.

The programmes has been available to parents with children seven years and younger for the last 9 months.  In that short time approximately 1,000 parents have gone through the various levels of the programmes available.

Parents in the counties of Longford and Westmeath now have free access to one of the world’s most respected parenting programmes, thanks to the Longford/Westmeath Parenting Partnership (LWPP).

Throughout 2010 and beyond, Triple P’s selection of courses, seminars and one-to-one consultations will be available to all Longford/Westmeath parents  -- initially for parents of children aged 7 and under.

The Longford/Westmeath Parenting Partnership  (LWPP) is an alliance set up to support local families by providing quality, evidence-based parenting information and courses.

Member organisations in the LWPP are:  Health Service Executive (HSE), Longford County Child Care Committee, Westmeath Country Child Care Committee, Westmeath Country Development, Longford Community Resources Ltd, Longford VEC, Athlone and Carrick-on-Shannon Education Centres and Athlone Community Services.

Plenty of sessions
Joe Ruane, Local Health Manager Health (HSE) says the organisations in the Partnership are committed to working together because all understand how important good parenting is to the health and wellbeing of the community.   He said Triple P was chosen for this initiative because of its flexibility.

“There are lots of levels to Triple P which means we can offer parents as much or as little help as they decide they need,” he says.

Group Triple P sessions, which run over a period of about two months, are already being held across the two counties in community centres, schools, crèches and other easily-accessible venues.

The Seminar Series will be launched in October and over the next two years the three seminars in the Triple P series will be offered free to parents of children in junior, senior, first and second classes.   Dates, times and locations will be posted to this website.

Investment in our future
Almost 100 practitioners, including public health nurses, health visitors, family support workers, youth and community workers, have already been trained and accredited to deliver Triple P to parents and more will be accredited as the programme is rolled out.

Dr Phil Jennings, Director Public Health Midlands Area is confident Triple P’s impact will be noticeable.

“Most people have no training for the role of parent, so this parenting programme, Triple P , can really help all parents to build their confidence in meeting the challenges that parenting can bring, “ he said.

“Good parenting sets children up for life and helps build positive family relationships and, by extension, community relationships. So Triple P is an investment in the future of children and our community.”

Member organisations in the LWPP are:  Health Service Executive (HSE), Longford County Child Care Committee, Westmeath County Child Care Committee, Westmeath County Development, Longford Community Resources Ltd, Longford VEC, Athlone and Carrick-on-Shannon Education Centres and Athlone Community Services.
